Uriah the Hittite lies wounded before a fortified city as an armed soldier stands over him with a blood-marked sword and shield. Smoke rises behind the rooftops, placing the moment in the chaos of siege warfare. The scene recalls the dark consequence of David’s sin, when Uriah was placed at the front of the fiercest battle and abandoned so that he would be struck down. In the biblical account, Uriah’s death exposes the terrible reach of hidden sin: betrayal moves from desire to deception, and then to bloodshed.
